The first spirit of importance in the history of America, rum formed one leg
of the triangle trade in colonial times. The first reference in 1651 calls
it rum-bullion alias kill-devil, and it is thought the word rum derives from saccharum
officinarum , the Latin taxonomic name for the sugarcane from which it is
