The first spirit of importance in the history of America, rum formed one leg
of the “triangle trade” in colonial times. The first reference in 1651 calls
it “rum-bullion alias kill-devil”, and it is thought the word rum derives from saccharum
officinarum , the Latin taxonomic name for the sugarcane from which it is
made. |

Rums are now the second largest selling spirits category, and for many years,
the top selling spirit brand in America has been a rum. A recent development
has been the popularity of flavored rums, adding an additional element of mixability
to what is already a highly mixable spirit. |
