The terms cordial and liqueur are interchangeable, though the former is said
to apply more to American products and the latter to European ones. Cordials
and liqueurs are made by combining or redistilling various spirits with flavoring
materials, which are typically fruits, flowers, herbs, seeds, barks, roots,
peels or extracts derived from them. By law, cordials and liqueurs must contain
at least 2.5% sugar by weight, though many contain up to 35% of a sweetening
agent. |
 |

While many cordials and liqueurs are generic and produced by many different
suppliers, such as Triple Sec or Crème de Menthe, several are proprietary
brands whose recipes are fiercely guarded. |
