Legend has it that brandy was first developed in the 16th century by an enterprising
Dutch sailor who attempted to save room on the wine casks he ferried from France
to Holland by concentrating the wine, transporting the spirit of the wine
and reconstituting the wine with water. However, the Dutch liked the concentrated
wine, which, because the distillation process involves heating was dubbed brandewijn,
or burnt wine. |

This was soon anglicized to brandy, and many areas of the world have adapted
brandy to their own cultures and tastes. There are markets worldwide for American
Brandy, Spanish Brandy, Italian, Greek even Peruvian Brandy. None are held,
however, in higher regard than those brandies which come from the Charente and Charente-Maritime departements of
France, known by the name of the area's major cityCognac. |
